‘Shopaholic Ties the Knot’ – Sophie Kinsella

Lausanne, May 2016

Overview

Becky and Luke get engaged. Her mother-in-law to be takes over, but Becky’s mum also organises a separate wedding, unaware of the first. Becky doesn’t make a decision and ends up, thanks to a private jet, having both weddings.

Thoughts

Meh. Not great. Easy read but the conflict wasn’t interesting and her lack of decision making, despite nearly saving it several times, was uninteresting. Not very funny either.

‘Killing Monica’ – Candace Bushnell

Geneva – London, July 2015

Synopsis

The one where an author has to get divorced and won’t have new book taken seriously. Long detour into relationship with friend and soon to be ex-husband. Accidentally fakes her death, ‘kills’ Monica (her prized fictional character) and prattles on about being strong and not needing a man on stage, while her son to be ex-husband dangles in mid-air.

Thoughts

Easy read but unbelievably stupid.

‘Saving Grace’ – Jane Green

Lausanne, March 2015

Synopsis

The one where Grace is terrified of her husband Ted. They employ Beth to be their PA and she takes over Grace’s life. Grace runs away to England to fall in love with Patrick and comes back. Beth vanishes, Ted feels bad, Grace stays with Patrick.

Thoughts

This was pleasantly awful – one dimensional characters, badly disguised suspense and antagonists, a far too long dalliance with mental illness that came out of nowhere – just terrible in a just about readable way.
